The perfect family outing - Boka Aquarium

aq1

The Center for the Protection of Adriatic Biodiversity "Boka Aquarium" is an organizational unit of the Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Montenegro, founded on February 28, 2020. The Center has two units: a public aquarium and a rescue center for sea turtles. It is the only institution in Montenegro that combines research and education to promote and practice effective protection of marine animals.

Boka Aquarium

Boka Aquarium is the only public aquarium in Montenegro. The aquarium builds public awareness and action to protect the species and habitats of the Adriatic Sea, actively contributes to various conservation solutions and serves as a model.

The Boka Aquarium has 18 tanks divided into four exhibition units: (1) the World Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, (2) the Adriatic Sea and the South Adriatic, (3) the Bay of Kotor and (4) the tropical sea.

In Dobrota, a 15-minute walk from Kotor's Old Town, there is the only public aquarium in Montenegro. It is located in the building of the Institute of Marine Biology, an institution that has been engaged in the protection and study of the Adriatic Sea since 1961. The building of the Institute itself is interesting. As a protected cultural monument, this two-century-old beauty arouses the interest of historians.

What can you see in Boka Aquarium?

The Boka Aquarium has three exhibition units: the World and Mediterranean Seas, the Adriatic Sea and the South Adriatic and the Bay of Kotor.

You can also meet some of them in person, such as the rye Ljubica or the seahorse Cedo. They have the task to introduce you to the mysterious world of the underwater world.

There is also the sea cat - one of the smaller species of sharks in the Adriatic. You may have already met her without even knowing it. Namely, this shark is a common occurrence in our sea and you can often see it in the catch of fishermen or meet it when diving at greater depths. It's not dangerous. The main star of the Boka Aquarium is the oyster rye. She is beautiful and a bit shy - when she buries herself in the sand, only her eyes are visible. It is harmless, which could not be said for a sea spider that can give you real trouble. So study Dragan, the sea spider that lives in the aquarium, carefully and remember what he looks like. Its poisonous thorns often unpleasantly surprise those who do not recognize it. nje, there is another species of fish that can be awkward - murina.
