Take a photo with a historical sailboat built in 1933


Ordered by Royal Yugoslav Navy, the ship is being built from 1931 to 1933 in H.C. "Stulcken & Sohn" in Hamburg – Germany.

The vessel itself was designed by Yugoslav naval architect, Josip Jozo Škarica, and the newly built vessel was launched on 25th June 1931 in Hamburg and completed on 27 June 1933, and delivered to the Royal Yugoslav Navy. Jadran arrived in her home country on 16th July 1933, docking in port of Tivat, where she was ceremoniously welcomed. She was commissioned on 19th August, which is also celebrate as her birthday.

Jadran is a three- masted barquentine, designed and built for the purpose of training young seaman. Fullfilling this role, the ship has sailed the Adriatic and money other seas in the world for nine decades now. During her life, the Jadran served in the navies of eight different states – from the kingdom of Yugoslavia to nowadays Montenegro and has twenty four training voyages.

More than nine decades, wind blows into the sails of training ship "Jadran" giving Montenegrin Navy the strength to sail the world seas. No matter the fact that faster and more powerful ships with motor power , have taken the throne over the world seas from sailing ships a few centuries ago, sailing ships are still unequalled as sailing classrooms for naval officer to be.

Numerous generations of the naval personnel have acquired their first knowledge and skill in sailing and navigation, as foundation for the future occupation, aboard this very ship. Training ship "Jadran" is the best school to get to know temper of the sea.

With her rich history, the Jadran training ship is the pride and the flagship of Montenegrin navy today , as well as a living monument of the technical heritage and marine traditions of ex Yugoslav people.

Ship's home port today is Tivat, with whom is not only tied with 12 km long ropes, but much stronger with pride and sentiment.


Althougt she officially is a warship, Jadran was never armed with purpose installed ship weapons.

In addition to the two main anchors, Jadran also has a 300 kg auxiliary anchor and 150 kg stream anchor.

All the winches and capstans on board Jadran, as well as all sail rigging and the ships rudder are also operated manually, with no electric or hydraulic assistance.

The total length of all the ropes and lines on board Jadran is 12 km.

As medieval sailing boats , the Jadran anchor capstan is not mechanically powered but is operated by manpower – her crews muscles turn the capstan by doing so, raise the two main anchors – each weighting 1.050 kg- from the seabed.

School ship Jadran continuously organizes " Open day " every summer season, when people has an opportunity to visit this beautiful training ship.
